EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) - Lionel Messi scored on three dazzling runs for his second international hat trick, finishing the season with a record 82 goals for club and country and giving Argentina to a 4-3 win over South American rival Brazil in an exhibition game Saturday.

With Brazil using a mostly young roster ahead of the Olympics, Romulo put the five-time world champions ahead in the 23rd minute. Messi gave Argentina a 2-1 lead with goals in the 31st and 34th on spectacular dashes that beat the defense, but Oscar tied the score in the 56th and Hulk tapped in a corner kick dropped by goalkeeper Sergio Romero in the 72nd.

Argentina came back once again three minutes later when Frederico Fernandez scored off a corner kick by Sergio Aguero, who had just entered the game.

Some Pinterest alternatives for the guys

Pinterest, the social network that lets users save and share images of things they love to digital pinboards, has taken the Web by storm. Since its launch in 2010, the new site has grown to about 17 million users per month. Earlier this year, it shoved its way to third place in social networks?behind Facebook and Twitter.

From decadent pastries to travel photos?to tattoo art, Pinterest has a pinboard for anything you can imagine, but the service has one limitation: The majority of the social network?s audience is women. That split doesn?t really mean much, unless you?re a guy who wants to post pictures of bacon-burgers, sports photos and fast cars (not to mention avoid pins celebrating new boy band One Direction in poem form). That said, where?s a man?s man to go to pin up some pics, bro?

Luckily, Pinterest?s success has inspired three macho alternatives: DartItUp, Gentlemint and MANteresting. Each alternative is an online man cave of cool with its own personality and slant toward a particular breed of modern-day dude.

Courtesy of Laptop

DartItUp
Here?s a Pinterest alternative so dude-friendly that to gain access you must take a Bro Compatibility Test. Don?t worry, this one-question quiz is a layup. Once it?s done, you?ll be darting ? or pinning ? images of motorcycles, Sports Illustrated pinups, ?80s video game characters, manly Internet memes and anything else worthy of the least fair sex?s attention to a virtualdartboard, the equivalent of Pinterest?s pinboard.

Interface/design: While DartItUp?s clean-looking slate-gray and cobalt-blue interface sets a strong tone, the controls still need work. For instance, DartItUp doesn?t support making new dartboards as you post a new image. That lack of convenience forces eager darters to manually make a dartboard, then go back to the homepage and post a new image. It slows down using the service.

Community: Want to post some darts with your friends? Not here, buddy. Unlike Pinterest, DartItUp doesn?t connect to external social networkssuch as Facebook or Twitter, nor does it hunt down any of your Gmail contacts who are currently darting. Considering there aren?t many users to begin with, it?s hard to find buddies. Plus, DartItUp is something of a ghost town. Dartboards are tiled with posts from the same names over and over. We know this is a man?s pinboard, but it feels like a sausage fest without enough sausage.

Addictiveness: You won?t find a pack of your friends on DartItUp, but you will find some hilarious, awesome posts. The male-minded goofery includes images of million-dollar locker rooms, soccer players taking kicks to the groin, food shots of bacon and epic BBQ spreads and way, way more.

We spent time browsing the Challenges and Debates sections, too. There, users can compete by throwing up darts to best match specified themes like ?The Top 10 Bad-Ass Actors? or ?Life or Death,? a visual gallery of the things man cannot live without (y?know, cheeseburgers, Captain America, college football, etc.). Unlike pee-wee league where everyone?s a winner, only the darts with the most likes, comments and re-darts gets the prize. The only downside: Users can?t create their own topics, so everyone posts to the same preset categories, which gets old fast.

Courtesy of Laptop

Gentlemint
Want to use Gentlemint? You?d better forget those posts about bacon and start sharing images of prosciutto, the finer pork. Accessible by invitation only, Gentlemint is filled with ?mints,? or shared images, on a networkthat?s more upscale than DartItUp or MANteresting. Heck, when it comes to matters of taste, the service even outclasses some of the finer pins from Pinterest?s classy ladies.

Interface/design: Gentlemint?s cartoon logo is a gentleman with a thick, curvy mustache and a monocle. That the logo looks like the little Monopoly guy says a lot about the target audience. Judging by its all-white minimalist look, Gentlemint is designed for men who choose Stella over Bud Light, Macs over PCs, Gruyere over American.

The site?s interface isn?t based on following other users. Instead, each user saves his own ?mints,? or liked items, to keep an ongoing list of stuff, and all users? mints are displayed on the homepage so you can like items other Gentleminters have posted. There are no boards to follow here, just a constant stream of new posts. Users can like, comment or add posts to their own mint, as well as post mints to Facebook, Google + and Twitter.

Community
: It?s important to note that while many posts on DartItUp, MANteresting and Pinterest simply highlight cool images, many of Gentlemint?s mints often point back to other websites with more information such as special instructions, unique recipes, articles worth reading or funny blog posts.

What kind of mints will you find on this service? We found a picture of Cafe Le Nemours near the Palais Royale in Paris that points to a recent entry in a travel blog and one titled ?Smoke Your Own Sun-Dried Tomatoes? that leads to a recipe for just that.

We also noticed posts more common to the other man-focused social networks, such as a poster of Ron Burgundy and characters from the movie ?Anchorman? with the text ?Stay Classy? and a racy-but-tasteful photo gallery of ?The Hunger Games? lead actress Jennifer Lawrence.

Addictiveness: Gentlemint probably won?t hold the abbreviated attention of today?s modern man. Posts on the site are often esoteric and vague. Plus, clicking on most mints requires users to browse elsewhere along the Web. And without the ability to follow specific users, there?s no guarantee you?ll find anything of interest. Gentlemint is helpful if you want to keep a running list of awesome Internet treasures, but in terms of sharing all that?s awesome, this site isn?t the best.

MANteresting

On this Pinterest alternative, you ?nail? images to ?workbenches? instead of pinning them to boards, a metaphor that underpins the site?s working-stiff theme. The interface and especially the content reflect that bootstrap mentality, too, right down to the construction-style stenciling of the site?s banner.

Interface/design: If MANteresting is the image-pinner for hard-labor dudes who wear Timberland boots 9 to 5, that sweat-and-toil ethic isn?t reflected in its interface. All drab tones and steely grays, MANteresting.com is uglier than Cee-Lo Green in a G-string. The main page is a layout of staggered tiles, just like Pinterest. But where Pinterest offers an elegant five-column layout, MANteresting has a lamer three-column take.

Clicking on a nailed image takes you to a light box with a larger version of the image that?s surrounded by uneven buttons for adding a comment or renailing an image to your work bench. Worse yet, some of the buttons aren?t even buttons, they?re just hyperlinks. The end result feels junky and confusing.

Community: You can sign up for?MANteresting with login details from Facebook or Twitter, but, oddly enough, you can?t leverage either social network to make bro-friends on the site. Instead, you must hunt-and-peck through hundreds of nails, following the bro-ddies and workbenches of your choice. You can post nails to Twitter, but there?s no direct Facebook integration. So if you want to share posts with friends and family on Facebook, fuhgedaboutit.

Of course, there?s tons of content to browse. Nails range from black-and-white photos of General Patton to women?s volleyball players to ?Walking Dead? memes to throwing knives, hawk axes and guns. There are so many guns. Spear guns, stun guns, shot guns, pug guns, a gun mounted beneath a car steering wheel and even a two-foot sword attached to the hilt of a handgun. If these sound like your kind of dudes, you are a very MANteresting person indeed.

Addictiveness: Despite the somewhat lackluster design, it?s easy to get caught in MANteresting?s net. Not only are images of awesome meatball subs and swank alcoholic beverages fun to scroll through, you can also vote ?Bump It? or ?Shame It? on each nail as well. Nails with the most (Fist) Bumps are gathered under a Top Voted section. Shamed posts are gathered on ? what else? ? the Wall of Shame.

Courtesy of Laptop

Bottom line
So which manly Pinterest alternative should you use? It depends. Each service has its own following. MANteresting is for blue-collar, rugged types. DartItUp is good for college-minded, sports-loving bracket-finishers, and Gentlemint is the image-sharer for stylish men who respect craft beer and boat shoes. Though each network tightly matches ? and appeals to ? the collective personality of its users, none offers a user experience as robust as their progenitor.

Like a dusty construction worker, MANteresting?s interface looks shabby, and since Gentlemint doesn?t allow users to follow one another, the service mimics snobbish hipsters. If we could pick one winner, it?s DartItUp. That site?s look is fun, and despite the unpolished controls, it was simple to find new Dartboards to follow.

Plan B: Man up on Pinterest
Huddle up, men, because here?s another option: How about we just use Pinterest? The original image-sharer has millions of users, finds your friends via Gmail or Facebook (though not Twitter) and it?s dead-easy to use. So what if 80 percent of users post images of Parisian fashions, flowery home decor and cupcakes? If we all rush in, we can take back our half of the social network. After all, there?s room for all of us.

Get Wild for Less on the Wild Africa Trek at Disney?s Animal Kingdom

I recently took a trek deep into the Pangani Forest with Josh Sussman, an actor known for his roles on ?Wizards of Waverly Place? and as the lovestruck gossip columnist Jacob on ?Glee.? He?s also provided the voice of Randy, a sinister crab on Disney Channel?s hit show ?Fish Hooks,? so Josh knows a little about interesting animals.

Our VIP excursion took us hiking through the jungle, walking across battered footbridges, traversing riverbeds teeming with giant crocodiles, learning about hippo herds and staring skyward to spot giraffes. A Florida shower hit as we boarded our private safari vehicle, which even added to the fun as we had a chance to study the animals through our binoculars as they enjoyed the cool rain on the savanna. By the time we reached our safari camp that overlooked the expansive savanna, the rain had stopped and the sun returned, providing a nice setting as we enjoyed a tasty selection of African-inspired foods.

In addition to leading our tour and entertaining us with their knowledge of the animals, our Safari Guides also tag-teamed as our personal trek photographers. Included in the price of each trek is a photo CD with professional photos of the tour and the exotic animals you?ll spot along the way.

For a limited time, you can save $50 on treks at or after 11:45 a.m. For more details on the limited-time Wild Africa Trek offer, call 407-WDW-TOUR or visit disneyworld.com/trek.

(AP) ? Suddenly the guard posts came down and the hired toughs who manned them melted away, restoring an air of freedom this week to a village that authorities turned into a prison to keep blind activist Chen Guangcheng under house arrest for nearly two years.

The checkpoints, surveillance cameras and other measures had remained in place even though Chen fled Dongshigu village six weeks ago for sanctuary at the U.S. Embassy in Beijing and ultimately went to New York to study. While directed at Chen, the security restrictions made life uncomfortable for his fellow villagers, who felt liberated with their removal.

"Finally we can sleep at night," said a villager who only gave her family name, Du, because the return to normalcy still felt uncertain. "In the past you could always hear footsteps from patrolmen and car noises at night, and the dogs barked."

"You no longer need to stop at checkpoints when you leave or enter the village. You can now walk down the road," said Du, a mother in her 20s who also farms. "I feel more at ease and happier."

So thorough was the cleanup this past weekend that locals said the surveillance cameras trained on Chen home had been removed and the high voltage street lamps dimmed. Two adjoining huts built at the village's entrance to house the guards ? and where outsiders trying to visit Chen had been beaten ? had been torn down. Even the trash they piled up had been taken away.

"It was as if the whole thing evaporated," said Chen's older brother, Chen Guangfu, who lives in the village with several others in the Chen family. "I feel liberated."

The persisting of the security barriers even after Chen's escape had raised questions about whether local authorities seemed intent on punishing other members of the family and the villagers who helped him flee.

Blinded by fever in infancy, Chen taught himself law and became known for defending the rights of poor farmers and the disabled in the wheat, soybean and peanut farming country of Shandong province. His exposure of forced abortions and sterilizations during an enforcement campaign for the government's one-child policy embarrassed local officials.

Over the nearly seven years since, he was either in prison or under house arrest, and his treatment carried the taint of a vendetta.

Rights lawyer Jiang Tianyong, a friend of Chen Guangcheng, said local authorities likely got rid of the surveillance to destroy evidence ahead of an investigation by the central government. After his escape, Chen said a citizens complaints official told him Beijing would investigate his detention.

"If Beijing wants to go through the motion, it can do so" with the absence of evidence, Jiang said. "But if Beijing wants a real investigation, it can still do so because there are plenty of witnesses."

Calls to the local town police were unanswered, and employees in the government office at Yinan county, which oversees Dongshigu, said they were not clear about the removal of security.

Five people from Dongshigu and a nearby village corroborated the weekend cleanup and said that they were relieved now that the community is free of guards for the first time since 2005.

"I feel much relaxed now," said a villager who also gave only her surname, Liu. "No one is blocking roads and keeping watch on the village."

Liu also expressed her puzzlement. "Why didn't they do it in broad daylight instead of removing the security at night?" Liu said.

With the security gone, much remains unsettled in Dongshigu. Chen's nephew is in police custody on charges of attempted murder after he fought with local officials who stormed into his house looking for Chen Guangcheng after his escape. He has been unable to see the lawyers his family wants to represent him.

Instead, the court has appointed two lawyers from the same law firms that defended Chen Guangcheng in his 2006 trial.

Chen Guangfu said the firms did not provide much defense then. "All they said in court was, 'no objection,'" the brother said.

During the 19 months since Chen Guangcheng was released from prison into house arrest, local officials and the people they hired sometimes beat Chen and his wife, roughed up his mother and harassed their young daughter. Some of the hired toughs came from the village or surrounding communities, getting paid 100 yuan, or $16, a day to chase away unwanted visitors and torment the Chen family.

Chen's supporters also welcomed the end of heavy security, seeing it as a possible sign that Beijing is acknowledging the unfairness of local authorities.

"I feel this is a step in the right direction," said He Peirong, an activist who aided Chen's escape by driving him away from the village. "It goes to show the government is not unchangeable but that it can make adjustments."

(AP) ? After years of nagging Oklahoma City Thunder coach Scott Brooks not to take him out of games, Kevin Durant finally got his wish.

And now, he's one big step closer to making his basketball dreams come true.

Durant had 34 points and 14 rebounds while playing all of regulation for the first time all season, and the Thunder claimed a spot in the NBA finals by beating the San Antonio Spurs 107-99 on Wednesday night.

Russell Westbrook added 25 points for the Thunder, who trailed Game 6 of the Western Conference finals by 18 in the first half and erased a 15-point halftime deficit before pulling ahead to stay in the fourth.

"It's an amazing moment for him to play like this in this moment, in this setting, and I wasn't going to take him out," Brooks said.

"I was not going to take him out. I don't care how many times he looked at me fatigued. He has enough, and I think all of our guys have enough to play. You just have to fight through it."

Durant grabbed the final rebound, dribbled the ball across halfcourt and raised his right fist to celebrate with a sold-out crowd wearing free white T-shirts. The franchise will play for the NBA title for the first time since 1996, before relocating from Seattle.

Even before the final buzzer, Durant indulged by hugging his mother and brother seated courtside after a foul was called with 14 seconds remaining.

"I never want to take those moments for granted," Durant said. "I know it's just one step closer to our dreams, but it felt good."

Tony Parker had 29 points and 12 assists for San Antonio, but only eight of the points and two assists came in the second half.

The Thunder outscored the Spurs 59-36 after falling behind 63-48 at halftime and getting a challenge from Brooks that he said had "nothing to do" with committing eight turnovers against only six assists while allowing San Antonio to shoot 9 for 15 on 3-pointers.

"It just had everything to do with who we are as men, who we are as a team, the type of spirit that we want to show every time down the court," Brooks said. "It was all about that, about body language, about being a family. I thought our guys did that the first possession of that second half and they did not look back."

Tim Duncan chipped in 25 points and 14 rebounds, and Stephen Jackson scored 23 as San Antonio lost its fourth straight after becoming only the fourth team in NBA history to win 20 games in a row.

In the process, the Spurs pushed past Oklahoma City for the best record in the league and home-court advantage in the playoffs. But the Thunder took that back by winning Game 5 in San Antonio on Monday night.

"There's not much to complain about," San Antonio's Manu Ginobili said. "We had a great run. We just couldn't beat these guys."

The Thunder, only three years removed from a 3-29 start that had them on pace for the worst record in NBA history, went through the only three West teams to reach the finals since 1998 ? Dallas, the Los Angeles Lakers and San Antonio ? to earn their shot at the title.

Game 1 of the NBA finals will be Tuesday night in Oklahoma City against either Boston or Miami. The Celtics lead that series 3-2 and can earn a trip to the finals with a win at home in Game 6 on Thursday night.

The Thunder took the lead for good early in the fourth quarter, getting nine of their first 13 points on free throws as the fouls started to pile up for San Antonio ? six on the defensive end and three on the offensive end in the first 7 minutes.

Even Durant drew what he thought was his first charge of the season, stepping in front of Ginobili.

Derek Fisher and James Harden hit 3-pointers in a three-possession span to increase the lead to 99-93 with 3:13 remaining. Jackson, who had made his previous six 3-pointers, and Parker both missed 3s that would have gotten the Spurs within 103-102 in the final minute.

The Spurs put up quite a fight, at least for the first half.

Parker, who had been largely bottled up ever since the Thunder put 6-foot-7 defensive specialist Thabo Sefolosha on him in Game 3, had a hand in the Spurs' first 12 baskets, making seven on his own and assisting on the other five.

Kawhi Leonard and Jackson followed his three-point play by nailing back-to-back 3-pointers for a 34-16 advantage in the final 2 minutes of the first quarter.

"I told the coaches that I could go all night, I could go 48, and I didn't think they would let me do it," Durant said. "But they kept me in and I just tried to give my team a spark."

The Thunder stormed back with an 11-2 run to start the third quarter and eventually pulled ahead after Durant's 3-pointer from the top of the key made it 79-77 with 1:41 left in the period.

San Antonio missed seven of nine of 11 3-pointers in the second half.

"The third quarter, it was like playing in mud," Spurs coach Gregg Popovich said. "So, that was our downfall as much as anything."

Notes: Popovich, whose request for his team to play nasty led to T-shirts being made in San Antonio, said at the morning shootaround that his team needed to play "with a little bit of ugly." Not nasty? "I was trying to stay away from that word," he said. ... San Antonio had a 29-28 edge in the second quarter after getting outscored 138-106 in the period in the first five games ? dropping more than six points per game. ... Greg Willard was initially scheduled to be one of the three officials but pulled out due to illness. Rodney Mott replaced him, alongside Joe Crawford and Bill Kennedy.

Alzheimer's vaccine trial a success

Thursday, June 7, 2012

A study led by Karolinska Institutet in Sweden reports for the first time the positive effects of an active vaccine against Alzheimer's disease. The new vaccine, CAD106, can prove a breakthrough in the search for a cure for this seriously debilitating dementia disease. The study is published in the distinguished scientific journal Lancet Neurology.

Alzheimer's disease is a complex neurological dementia disease that is the cause of much human suffering and a great cost to society. According to the World Health Organisation, dementia is the fastest growing global health epidemic of our age. The prevailing hypothesis about its cause involves APP (amyloid precursor protein), a protein that resides in the outer membrane of nerve cells and that, instead of being broken down, form a harmful substance called beta-amyloid, which accumulates as plaques and kills brain cells.

There is currently no cure for Alzheimer's disease, and the medicines in use can only mitigate the symptoms. In the hunt for a cure, scientists are following several avenues of attack, of which vaccination is currently the most popular. The first human vaccination study, which was done almost a decade ago, revealed too many adverse reactions and was discontinued. The vaccine used in that study activated certain white blood cells (T cells), which started to attack the body's own brain tissue.

The new treatment, which is presented in Lancet Neurology, involves active immunisation, using a type of vaccine designed to trigger the body's immune defence against beta-amyloid. In this second clinical trial on humans, the vaccine was modified to affect only the harmful beta-amyloid. The researchers found that 80 per cent of the patients involved in the trials developed their own protective antibodies against beta-amyloid without suffering any side-effects over the three years of the study. The researchers believe that this suggests that the CAD106 vaccine is a tolerable treatment for patients with mild to moderate Alzheimer's. Larger trials must now be conducted to confirm the CAD106 vaccine's efficacy.

Sasquatch! Music Festival at the Gorge Amphitheater The Santa ...

It?s always irked me how Coachella is touted as the Fest of the West, when the Sasquatch! Music Festival is, in many ways, a more interesting experience. To be sure, comparing any two festivals is as silly as trying to compare the music itself, but where the former is a weak dose of the festival drug, the latter seems a full-blown intravenous injection, both immersive and addictive. If the desert doesn?t meet your fancy, and you don?t mind an insanely long but scenic trek, look no further than the highlands of George, Washington. The weather is more temperate, the people are friendlier (read: Canadian), and with camping both free and (practically) mandatory, one can steer clear of stressful logistics and undue gouges to the wallet. You may not get a gander at some of those glamorous reunion acts, and this year the sound issues seemed to be more persistent than usual, but add it all up and you?ve still got four beautiful, relaxing days of?music.

To me, a festival experience is largely defined as a function of risk and reward. In general, the less expectations I have, and the more out of my element I feel, the greater the reward. This being my second year at Sasquatch!, I knew a little more about what to expect, but the setting of the Gorge Amphitheatre is still a wonder to me. The festival is divided between five stages (one more than last year), each with benefits and drawbacks unique to every artist. Read on to find out who were the heroes of each stage, who the villains, and who the innocent?bystanders.

SASQUATCH?STAGE

The Shins

Levi?Michaels

The?Shins

Sitting atop a precipice that overlooks the Columbia River, this hulking beast of a stage acts as the centerpiece of a natural amphitheater, towering like a musical monolith over the northern wild. With the right musicians at the helm, it sort of feels like God is working the visuals. Of course, it?s not an ideal setting for every band; even though there is hardly a bad seat in the house, some artists have difficulty filling such a monumental space. This year, the main stage was occupied by a wide range of artists, from folk and indie rockers to party-starting DJs. On Friday, Pretty Lights was in charge of closing out the first night with his heavy amalgamation of hip-hop, jazz, and dubstep samples, but seemed to miss the mark that bands had an easier time hitting. The following night, main stage duties were presided over by Metric, The Shins, and Jack White. Led by former Broken Social Scene member Emily Haines, Metric?s synth-heavy indie rock is practically tailor-made for stadium-sized venues, and despite a few slip-ups and a false start or two, Haines and crew easily occupied every inch of the amphitheatre. Metric was no match for The Shins, though, who absolutely owned the place with a set of mostly classic jams like ?Caring is Creepy,? peppered with newer cuts from their latest effort, Port of Morrow. The energy was infectious for the duration of the set, and Sasquatch himself even made an appearance on stage during ?September.? On Monday, main stage heavy hitters included Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, Silversun Pickups, and Feist, who beamed with longer, harmony-laden arrangements from last year?s Metals. Undoubtedly, though, it was Tenacious D who claimed the place for the night, as they worked oldies and new tracks from Rize of the Fenix into a series of skits and misadventures that included another Sasquatch sighting and a devil possessing guitarist John Konesky. I can safely say, however, that my weekend was complete upon hearing the entire amphitheatre singing ?Fuck Her Gently? in soft, passionate?chorus.

BIGFOOT?STAGE

Explosions in the Sky

Levi?Michaels

Explosions in the?Sky

Weighing in after the amphitheatre is the Bigfoot stage, a decently sized deck that hosted some of the best acts of the weekend, like Explosions in the Sky on Friday night. It seems that no festival is complete these days without these four Texans drowning folks in their huge, feedback-ridden guitars. Though there were no major aberrations from the band?s now usual setlist, it?s always a pleasure to hear massive arrangements like ?Birth and Death of the Day? and ?The Only Moment We Were Alone? with newer, more rhythmic tunes like ?Postcard From 1952? in between. On Saturday, St. Vincent gave a truly mind-blowing performance that landed somewhere between frightening and liberating. Annie Clark and her crew have been touring practically nonstop since October, but this performance felt alarmingly different than anything I had seen before. Sure, they ran through the same motions, including a cover of The Pop Group?s ?She is Beyond Good and Evil,? and Clark crowd-surfing during the final run of ?Krokodil.? But there was something about the way she forced herself on a hesitant and uninterested crowd, thrashing wildly around with sharp stiletto heels like she was the pinnacle of punk, even though the sound really wasn?t all that great. Maybe it was that feeling of alarm ? that unmistakable moment where you ask yourself, ?Is this what it looks like when somebody breaks down on stage?? In any case, after Clark was escorted off by security guards, and a woman next to me turned to her friends and declared, ?That was the worst thing I?ve ever seen,? I knew that I had just seen the most badass festival performance in quite some time. The following night, however, saw the Bigfoot stage hosting another female-fronted group who shattered my expectations for different reasons entirely. Sleek, precise and indomitably sexy, Little Dragon has certainly grown up in the nine months of relentless international touring that has passed since their spot at last year?s Outside Lands festival. Not a single imperfection was heard during the time these Swedish dance floor despots were on deck, and though they did not have the biggest stage at their disposal, they certainly played like it. Their minimal electronic tones came through crystal clear for the set, which leaned heavily toward their third and latest full-length, Ritual Union, leaving plenty of room for vocalist Yukimi Nagano to fill the mix with her deep contralto voice (?Little Man?), rise to a mounting, almost orgasmic pitch at select moments (?Please Turn?), or just sit back and amaze everyone with a cowbell solo (?Brush the Heat?). Simply put, the night belonged to Little Dragon, and nobody else that weekend even came close to the level of authority they?commanded.

BANANA?SHACK

STRFKR

Levi?Michaels

STRFKR

I?m tempted to end this review with such a definitive statement, but that would overlook the Banana Shack and the many electronic bands that dominated this space, like STRFKR. Despite working with some serious sound issues (an annoying buzz seemed to persist behind the mix for most of their set), the Portlanders pulled through with their bouncy, keyboard-heavy jams and a very patient crowd. Dressed in a hooded rainbow cape, composer Joshua Hodges breathed his soft, airy vocals above a decent mix, but it wasn?t until the last song that he finally asserted himself vocally. Com Truise followed up in the same vein with a steady DJ set powered by flittering synths and heavy beats at a head-nodding tempo, perfect for an early evening lull. Also on Saturday, Fred Armisen and Carrie Brownstein of Portlandia had a go at the Banana Shack, beginning with an on-stage text message war and a slideshow reel that introduced the pair via silly yearbook portraits and childhood photos. It made for a fun diversion for a while, but as soon as they invited the audience to participate in a game of ?Did You See?? (a variant of ?Did You Read?? for those who follow the show), it was on to the next thing. As the excitement of the weekend mounted on Sunday evening, Tycho took over and slowed things down. The brainchild of visual artist Scott Hansen, who is also known for his design work as ISO50, Tycho enlisted the help of a drummer and bassist for a combination of sedative visuals and ambient beats, almost like Explosions in the Sky recreated with electronics. Closing out the Banana Shack that night was James Murphy, who brought with him a cheeky ?80s dance party vibe, plenty of lasers, and some downright bizarre house tracks. Save for an inharmonious mix or two, Murphy did a killer job feeding the party on the most exciting night of the weekend, and when he got on the mike to shout his thanks, he professed that it was his ?best festival set in years.? But not even James Murphy at his best could hold a flame to SBTRKT?s Monday night performance. Although the Man of Many Masks was flying solo with a DJ set instead of the drummer/vocalist combination he usually performs with, he found his groove with ease by mixing sinuously between UK garage, house, and dubstep. Booties were shaking, the mix was fluid and unpredictable, and he played ?Wildfire,? his breakout collaboration with Little Dragon, not once, but twice! Just when it seemed things couldn?t get any sexier, the Londoner took us back to the ?90s with Booty Call?s ?My Boo,? truly an homage to his R&B?heritage.

YETI?STAGE

Gardens & Villa

Levi?Michaels

Gardens &?Villa

Which brings us to the Yeti. Despite being the smallest stage, a tiny moon by comparison to the red giant of the Sasquatch stage, the Yeti was the most problematic in terms of sound. Feedback issues were persistent, and the right speaker died completely on more than one occasion. However, the area is not without its merits, as the stage enjoys an auspicious view of the Gorge and faces directly towards the setting sun, making for some breathtaking views in the evening. Unfortunately, even with a sunset lighting up their faces, Zola Jesus could not overcome the sound failures, and their operatic electronics mostly fell flat. By contrast, our hometown space-rockers Gardens & Villa did Santa Barbara proud by successfully coping with similar problems during their Sunday afternoon set with the help of a lively, forgiving crowd. Even the temporary death of a speaker during ?Spacetime? could not discourage the five-piece, nor their young fans, who climbed on one another?s shoulders during ?Orange Blossom? at the band?s request. Hardly surprising, as there is probably no better place to hear Gardens & Villa?s nature-obsessed mating calls than the Gorge. Some how I don?t think that?s the last Sasquatch! will hear from Santa Barbara ? but let?s crash the party next year, just to be?sure.

6 Tips for Developing As a Communicator

24850_The Shops at Target + Spend $50 Get Free Shipping on Select Items - Opens 5/6?

?

Have you ever had the?experience?of hearing a speaker and come away from the experience thinking: ?I would have said that this way?? ?Or perhaps you have read an article and thought: ?I would have written that this way??

If you have ever said that to yourself, you may have the makings of a public speaker, or, perhaps, a writer.

How can I say that? ?The truth is that speakers and writers all engage in a continual self narrative running in their heads. ?They see events and hear a story being told, if only in their heads.

The challenge comes in how to get that?nascent narrative developed until it is a complete speech or article. ?This process is something that, once we understand how it is done, we can do regularly and, with practice, even easily.

There are some tricks you can use to develop your public speaking skills. ?As with any skills you learn, you have to practice them to actually improve at the skill. ?If your expectation is to be perfect as a speaker or a writer on your first effort, you?ll have some difficult?experiences?ahead of you.

6 Tips For Developing Your Skills as a Communicator

1. ?Identify your passion. ? Passion is that thing that excites or moves you in the core of your being. ?It doesn?t require extreme effort to get going to do it. ?It creates its own energy in you and doesn?t wear you out. ?Find your passion, and speaking about it or writing about it becomes all the easier.

2. Take copious notes. ?Notes don?t have to be logical, at least not initially. ?If you are writing on a broad theme, the more notes you develop early, even with an almost train of thought approach, you will find you have plenty when it gets time to hone your speech or your article.

3. ?Realize the duality of the development stage. ?Sound confusing? ?It isn?t. ?When you first start out as a public speaker, you will run to one of two extremes. ?You will either have far too little material for the time you have allotted, or you will have far more material than you have for the time allotted.

I once was preaching in English at a bi-lingual ?church in Taipei. ?Though I spoke Mandarin well enough to preach in it, this particular church used a translator from which every language was used for preaching in to the other.

Prior to me starting an elderly gentleman had been asked to give a 5 minute presentation about his experience in one of the men?s groups in the church.

He had not done much public speaking, and I knew I was not going to have much time to preach (normally there was about 25 minutes), when the old gentleman began telling about when he was 25 (he was about 80 at the time). ?He went for about 25 minutes!

So what is the lesson there? If you aren?t used to speaking in public, it can be very easy to have way too much to say and you go way past the amount of time you should be using. ?That is one side of the duality.

The other side of the duality of the development stage is having too little. ?In this instance, you understand your time, but despite what you think, you prepare far less than the time needed.

If you are blogging, it is very easy to have far more written down than most people will be willing to spend reading. ?You have to practice, and you have to edit.

4. Practice, practice, practice. ?It may sound silly, but if you do not have much experience in public speaking, your trusty video camera will be your best friend. ?Once you have developed your topic, get in front of the camera, and speak as if it was your actual speaking engagement.

Don?t stop. ?Don?t edit. ?Go all the way through it, and be sure to time it. ?When you have finished, have a look at the entire video. ?Did you finish too soon? ?Did you go too long? ?What about the content? ?Did you cover the topic thoroughly if not exhaustively? ?Did you leave your audience wanting to hear more, to know more, or, best of all, wanting to have you back?

5. Look for opportunities to use your developing skills. ?There are organizations which not only allow you speak publicly, they actually encourage it! ?Toastmasters is one such organization. ?There are others that have regular needs for public speakers. ?Identify them and you have a built in way to develop you skills in real life situaions.

6. ?Constantly develop material. ?Write down your insights or inspirations. ?Work at thinking narratively. ?Practice how you would say something you hear another speaker say (don?t?plagiarize, but do ?riff? off of the words of others).

?

This is not an exhaustive list. ?Just some things to start with as you seek to develop as a communicator. ?Look for future posts on this topic.

?

What about you? ?Do you enjoy speaking publicly? ?Or does it petrify you? ?What are you doing to improve?

?

Advances in understanding cancer at the molecular level mean doctors can better select the drugs that will most help individual patients. To do so, they must identify which genetic mutations are driving the growth of a patient's tumor, and that shift is making their work much harder.

"We've had this biological revolution that has sliced the pie for these cancers finer and finer as we've learned more about the genomics of cancer," said Dr. George Sledge, co-director of the breast cancer program at Indiana University and a past president of the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO).

For example, during a scientific presentation at the ASCO annual meeting this week in Chicago, Sledge said he learned of at least 17 different subtypes of acute lymphoblastic leukemia, or ALL, the most common type of leukemia in children. "Even trying to wrap your head around that is hard," Sledge said.

New clinical trial findings released at the meeting show how quickly personalized medicine is taking root, offering further evidence in favor of targeting treatment to specific tumor mutations rather than their location in the body. The studies point to new treatments for breast and prostate cancers and the deadly skin cancer melanoma. As a result, doctors face a growing demand for sophisticated genetic sleuthing. That raises the bar for oncologists at well-funded academic medical centers armed with the latest technology, and also makes it tougher for tens of thousands of U.S. oncologists in smaller, community practices to compete.

Companies like Pfizer Inc often partner with other firms or work in-house to develop companion diagnostic tests to help predict if a patient would respond to their drugs. Researchers increasingly are finding more than one mutation influencing a cancer's growth, requiring a more complex analysis that may lead to a combination of treatments for patients.

"Cancers that may look identical under the microscope may actually have very different genetic abnormalities, and therefore, are likely to respond to very different kinds of therapies," said Dr. Mace Rothenberg, senior vice president for oncology at Pfizer. "What is happening is a very rapid evolution in thinking - from one test on one tumor to actually doing multiple tests on one tumor sample."

NEW TESTING INDUSTRY EVOLVES

U.S. university-affiliated medical centers are developing their own genetic tests to serve patients and researchers, while new diagnostic companies are emerging to help community-based doctors select the best medicines or find clinical trials where drugs that target specific genetic mutations are being tested.

"The technology is evolving so quickly that there is now the availability to screen for literally 250 different cancer- associated genes in a single tumor sample," Rothenberg said.

Foundation Medicine, based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, was founded by a group of cancer geneticists from the Broad Institute, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

The company's lab opened in October and has been doing genomic profiling for drugmakers including Sanofi, Celgene, Novartis and Johnson & Johnson. Foundation Medicine unveiled its genetic profiling test at the ASCO meeting.

"Somehow we expect that the community oncologist is magically going to get his or her arms around the vast number of molecular diagnostic tests that are available for any given mutation," said Dr. Michael Pellini, Foundation Medicine's president and chief executive officer.

The company's FoundationOne test costs $5,800. It scans a single tumor sample for more than 200 genetic alterations known to be at work in cancers and gives doctors a report suggesting both approved drugs and ones being tested in clinical trials. Pellini said the company plans to expand the number of gene mutations its test analyzes as the science advances.

"Clearly, the diagnostic companies are going in this direction and we must go in this direction," said Dr. Paolo Paoletti, president of oncology for GlaxoSmithKline.

Other countries are trying different approaches to adopting more sophisticated methods of cancer diagnostics. France's government-run healthcare system has selected several regional labs to which tumor tissue can be sent from across the country, Paoletti said.

"Whenever a cancer patient in France has melanoma, they send the tissue there to see if there is a BRAF mutation or not. It's fantastic," Paoletti said. Glaxo is testing a drug that works by blocking BRAF, a genetic mutation linked to some melanoma cases.

In Germany, Dr. Thomas Zander of the University Hospital Cologne and colleagues sought to meet the needs of community hospitals by setting up a network to send lung tumor samples to a central lab.

Forty percent of the samples sent to the lab had genetic mutations that could be targeted with available drugs, Zander said. They included Roche Holding's Tarceva and Pfizer's Xalkori, which target different specific genetic alterations in lung cancer.

Among patients with lung adenocarcinomas, the most common type of lung cancer, the lab spotted mutations in five other gene mutations for which there are now drugs in clinical trials.

RAISING MORE QUESTIONS

In addition to the Foundation Medicine genetic profiling test, other U.S.-based initiatives include two other methods: sequencing the whole genome of tumors, or sequencing the exome - only the genes that code for proteins.

A team from the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center in Baltimore, including Dr. Victor Velculescu and Luis Diaz, has started a company called Personal Genome Diagnostics Inc that does this type of testing.

"Right now, you can use any of the three methods to identify most of the alterations that are targetable for drugs," said Dr. Bert Vogelstein, who directs the Ludwig Center for Cancer Genetics & Therapeutics at Johns Hopkins. "As more drugs become available, which approach will be most effective? The market will work that out."

Foundation Medicine has helped guide treatment in some puzzling cancer cases. It cited one patient with inflammatory breast cancer who had already been treated extensively with little success when a sample of her tumor was sent for testing.

The team found an amplification of the protein HER-2, which is routinely tested for in clinics and treated with the Roche drug Herceptin, or trastuzumab, and also found a mutation in a gene called EGFR more typically linked to lung cancer.

"This mutation was provocative because it is similar to those for which the drug erlotinib or Tarceva is highly successful in lung cancer," said Dr. Vincent Miller, senior vice president of clinical development at Foundation Medicine. The results raised the question of whether the patient's doctor should use Tarceva even though it is not approved for breast cancer, or seek a clinical trial where it is being tested.

"It changes the way people have to think, and it raises questions people might not want to wrestle with," Miller said.
